EVEN IN WINTER, THEY ARE THERE (HIBERNATING)

Walking on snowshoes in temperatures nearing 50 degrees below zero, we quickly learned to respect our venue - the wilderness. And we also located several winter dens in which black bears hibernated. What became a search for moose in winter also engaged our senses for bear dens...everywhere.

Photographing hibernating bear dens in winter (on snowshoes) is a real challenge
In winter, the vastness of parks and private lands is truly astounding
The Over the Cliff crew was looking for the pooortunity of locating a bear den and/or moose beds in MINUS 46 degree weather. That's a real challenge. The return from this point was 6 miles...all on snowshoes.
Eldon Jandreau - survivalist and guide.
For survivalist and guide, Long Bow Jandreau, he's become accustomed to putting on a mike so we can hear his comments during long walks.
Although looking for bear, 15 miles into the Allagash Wilderness, we're hot on the trail of a family of moose. The rubbings on the trees indicate their presence (as well as their long legs "piercing the snow" as deep as 5 feet.
